Thompson Adjusting Technique: A Manual Adjustment

The Thompson Technique came was developed by a man named Dr. Clay Thompson. The Thompson Technique is a form of chiropractic care that includes what can be referred to as a “segmental drop table” to enhance the effectiveness of the adjustive thrust. The segments of this table enable the table to drop a specific measurement each time a thrust is delivered.

The purpose of the drop is to distract (open) the joint during the adjustment. The drop pieces assist the thrust and minimize the force required for the adjustment. Cavitation of the joint may or may not occur.

Common areas treated with the Thompson Technique are pelvic, dorsal, and lumbar regions. The Thompson Technique quickly gained popularity because it is not painful and uses minimal force.

How does the Thompson Technique work?

A first step in the Thompson Technique is the method it uses to determine an imbalance in the length of your legs. By performing a leg measurement analysis, we will be able to determine the type of misalignment you may be suffering from. It gets pretty technical, but basically, by doing this we can detect imbalances in your neurological system and how it may be affecting your muscles and ligaments and which muscles and ligaments. It could be cervical, pelvic, etc. Then we can determine the type of adjustment we need to do.

Your leading active life chiropractor in Reno, will be the chiropractor who treats you. He/she will treat you by placing you on a drop table lying with your face down. You’ll need to keep your shoes on (preferably close-toed shoes). This helps determine where your heel and shoe meet on each foot. You may need to do an X-Ray of your legs.

We will set the drop table accordingly and the chiropractor will place a hand on the table. When pressure is applied, the drop table will assist in removing the subluxation that is ultimately causing you discomfort.

When we are done performing the Thompson procedure, you may experience some warmth flowing to specific parts of your body. That means the treatment is working! It is a result of the restoration of your nerve functions. Many people say that after the first adjustment they feel much better, but some people may need a few more.
